Biodiversity Day 2025_Sustainability Global international
Biodiversity, the vital web of life on Earth, faces urgent threats, and International Biodiversity Day 2025 calls for immediate action to protect it. With 1 million species facing extinction and ecosystems degrading rapidly, the International Day for Biological Diversity 2025, celebrated on May 22, is a critical moment to act. Under the theme “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development”, this UN-sanctioned event calls for urgent action to support the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). At Sustainability Global, our Pillar 7: Ecosystems, Biodiversity, and Water Security sustainabilityglobal.org/ecosystems-biodiversity-and-water-security drives our mission to protect nature and ensure water security. In this blog, we explore why the International Day for Biological Diversity 2025 matters, how Sustainability Global’s tools empower action, and what you can do to join the movement for a greener future.

Why International Day for Biological Diversity 2025 Matters

Biodiversity encompasses the variety of plants, animals, microorganisms, and ecosystems that sustain life. Fish provide 20% of animal protein for 3 billion people, while plants supply 80% of human diets. Ecosystems like mangroves and wetlands purify water and store carbon, supporting SDG 6 (Clean Water) and SDG 13 (Climate Action). Yet, human activities, deforestation, pollution, and climate change, have altered 75% of terrestrial ecosystems and threaten 1 million species.

The International Day for Biological Diversity 2025, coordinated by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), commemorates the CBD’s adoption on May 22, 1992. Its 2025 theme, “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development”, emphasizes the link between biodiversity and the SDGs. The KMGBF, adopted in 2022, sets 23 targets for 2030, including restoring 20% of degraded ecosystems and reducing invasive species by 50%. With only five years left to meet these goals, urgency is paramount.

The International Day for Biological Diversity was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 to mark the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) on May 22, 1992, a landmark treaty signed by 196 countries to protect biodiversity. Initially observed on December 29, it was shifted to May 22 in 2000 to align with the CBD’s signing date and boost global awareness. Over the decades, the day has galvanized millions, from grassroots campaigns to policy reforms, advancing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). Sustainability Global’s Pillar 7 supports this legacy by promoting ecosystem restoration and water security, empowering action for Biodiversity Day 2025. Explore Pillar 7.

The Biodiversity Crisis: A Call to Action

A World Without Biodiversity: The Crisis Unfolds

Imagine a world where coral reefs no longer teem with life, forests fall silent, and rivers run dry. This isn’t a distant dystopia, it’s the reality unfolding due to the biodiversity crisis. The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) warns that 1 million species, from pollinators like bees to apex predators like jaguars, face extinction, undermining 80% of UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets. Biodiversity loss threatens food security (SDG 2), health (SDG 3), clean water (SDG 6), and climate stability (SDG 13), creating a ripple effect that endangers humanity’s future.

Ecosystems in Peril: From Amazon to Wetlands

Consider the Amazon rainforest, often called Earth’s lungs. Since 1970, 17% of its canopy has vanished, driven by deforestation for agriculture, reducing its capacity to absorb 2 billion tons of CO₂ annually. This loss disrupts rainfall patterns, threatening water security for 40 million people across South America. Similarly, wetlands, which purify water for 1.6 billion people and store 30% of land-based carbon, are disappearing three times faster than forests. Their decline fuels droughts and floods, as seen in India’s 2024 monsoon disruptions, which displaced 2 million people.

Health and Food Security at Risk

Biodiversity loss also heightens health risks. Disrupted ecosystems increase zoonotic diseases, think Ebola or COVID-19, by bringing wildlife and humans closer. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 75% of emerging diseases stem from biodiversity loss, a stark reminder of nature’s role as a health buffer. Coral reefs, home to 25% of marine species, face bleaching from warming oceans, jeopardling the loss of fisheries that feed 1 billion people, impacting SDG 14 (Life Below Water).
The International Day for Biological Diversity 2025, set for May 22, is a global wake-up call. Its theme, Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development, aligns with Sustainability Global’s Pillar 7: Ecosystems, Biodiversity, and Water Security, which champions ecosystem restoration and water protection. “Biodiversity isn’t just wildlife, it’s our life support system,” says Vice-President of Sustainability Global. “Our tools empower everyone to act.”

Sustainability Global’s Tools for Biodiversity and Water Security

Sustainability Global offers innovative tools to support Pillar 7 and the International Day for Biological Diversity 2025. Here’s how they align with biodiversity and water security:

AI-Powered Carbon Footprint Calculator

Our Carbon Footprint Calculator sustainabilityglobal.org/carbon-footprint-calculator helps users reduce emissions, a key driver of biodiversity loss. By analyzing energy, travel, and lifestyle data, it offers tailored tips like adopting plant-based diets, which reduce deforestation. For example, Aisha, a teacher, cut her footprint by 10% after using the tool, supporting SDG 13 and ecosystem health. If 1 million users follow suit, we could avoid 500,000 tons of CO₂ annually, equivalent to saving 10,000 hectares of forest. Try the calculator.

How Biodiversity Supports Water Security

Biodiversity and water security are interconnected. Healthy ecosystems regulate water cycles, purify supplies, and mitigate floods. For instance:
  • Wetlands: Filter pollutants, providing clean water for 1.6 billion people.
  • Forests: Regulate rainfall, preventing droughts that threaten SDG 6.
  • Coral Reefs: Protect coastal ecosystems, ensuring water quality for marine life (SDG 14).
The International Day for Biological Diversity 2025 highlights these links. Sustainability Global’s tools, like the Carbon Footprint Calculator, reduce pressures on ecosystems, while our Skill Test Program educates users on water conservation. Learn about water security.

Pillar 7: Driving Biodiversity and Water Security

Sustainability Global’s Pillar 7 focuses on:
  • Biodiversity Protection: Safeguarding species and genetic diversity to support ecosystems.
  • Ecosystem Restoration: Rehabilitating degraded habitats like wetlands and forests.
  • Water Security: Ensuring clean, accessible water through ecosystem preservation.
This aligns with the KMGBF’s goal to restore 20% of degraded ecosystems by 2030. For example, protecting mangroves, a Pillar 7 priority, absorbs CO₂, prevents coastal erosion, and purifies water, supporting SDG 14 (Life Below Water). “Pillar 7 is our blueprint for harmony with nature,” says Dr. Aurora Romano, Pillar Fellow at Sustainability Global.
